JOSEPH STORE HOUSE MINISTRY | This new ministry at Bryanston Methodist Church, has been created because of the need for food for the underprivileged. We came to realize that there is a lot of food which is wasted because it is so-called "distressed food". This includes food which "sell-by-date" is passed, but the food is still perfectly fit for human consumption, or the packaging is damaged. This ministry focuses mainly on obtaining this type of dry distressed food (non-perishables), which is returned to the food distributors or manufacturers by the retail stores which, in many cases, just lies around in warehouses or is simply destroyed. | | In order to satisfy the donors (food distributors and manufacturers), a process has to take place, before these foods can be distributed to the underprivileged.
A "factory" is being set at BMC, where these processes will take place, which consist of:
Receiving the food.Washing the food, or its containers. Separate the food fit for human consumption from food which may show signs of being unfit.De-branding both fit and unfit foodsLabeling all foodsDestroying all labels or branded packaging for both fit and unfit foods, in such a way that these cannot be re-used.Disposing of unfit food through professional waste management.Distributing the fit food either directly, or through various channels known to BMC.For this whole process, a precise accounting system is implemented, which accounts for all the received, destroyed and distributed food, which is used for auditing, as well as reporting to the donor companies. The initial target is to receive 3 metric tons per day, which would then feed, 3000 people a day, 15000 people a week (five day) week, 780000 people a year.By receiving 3 tons of food a day, each day the Joseph ministry, would handle 9 tons of food every day. (3 tons in, 3 tons processed, 3 tons dispatched). |
